About Hermosillo

The origin of Hermosillo dates from 1700, when the towns of Nuestra Señora del Pópulo , Nuestra Señora de los Angeles and the Santísima Trinidad del Pitic, inhabited by Seris, Tepocas and Pimas Bajos were founded.

The original purpose of our city was to contain the Indios Seris and Tepocas. All this to protect the Hispanic expansion with the name of Real Prison de San Pedro de la Conquista, thus was named in honor to Viceroy Mr. Pedro de Castro and Figueroa Duque de la Conquista and Marqués de Gracia.

In 1718, by orders of Mr. Manuel de San Juan y Santa Cruz reestablish the population of the town of the Santísima Trinidad del Pitic; September 29, 1725 los Seris raised themselves to declare war and invaded the town of Opodepe. The Seris were persuaded and persecuted with the purpose of punishing them until they signed the peace treaty in January of 1726, and they settled down in the points called Alares and Moraga; subsequently given the uncertainty by the aggressiveness of the natives the prison of del Pitic was founded.

In February 9, 1825 started the process for establishing our city; and in September 5, 1828 the Legislature of State of the West of removed the primitive name and then presented the name of Hermosillo. Hermosillo was given to honor General José María González Hermosillo.
